The MIR students had their first experience of an oceanographic field trip on board the ship Antedon II of the French oceanographic fleet in mid-October, 2021.
In groups of 7/8 students accompanied by two supervisors from the University of Toulon, Professors Anne Molcard and Yann Ourmières, they spent a day in the Toulon bay. They were able to deploy drifting buoys that transmit their GPS positions through satellite communication at regular time intervals, thus providing direct information on the surface current.

They were also able to observe in real time vertical profiles of water temperature, salinity and oxygen using a rosette equipped with a CTD (Conductivity, Temperature, Depth sensors) and an electrocarrier cable launched via the ship’s winch at different stations.
All the instruments were recovered, and the analysis of the data is in progress by the students.
